The Woburn Elks Club in Woburn, Massachusetts, was operating with an aging heating and air conditioning system, including approximately 10 hydronic air handlers and two large rooftop cooling units. With multiple gathering spaces, function rooms, offices, and other areas serving different needs, the club was looking for a modern, efficient system that would provide greater comfort and individual temperature control. Comfort Professor designed a Bryant multi-zone ductless heat pump installation to deliver heating and cooling where needed while reducing the club’s dependence on its older equipment.

The age and construction of the Woburn Elks Club presented several challenges. Much of its existing mechanical infrastructure was concealed above finished ceilings, making conditions difficult to assess before installation. Brick walls required careful penetrations for refrigerant piping, condensate drainage, electrical wiring, and communication cables. With multiple rooms and varying occupancy patterns, the team also needed to provide appropriate capacity and individual comfort while limiting disruption to the building.

The new system provides independent temperature control across the club's different areas, allowing occupied rooms to be conditioned according to their needs instead of treating the entire building as a single zone. Bryant inverter-driven heat pump technology adjusts output to heating and cooling demand. The retrofit also provides more flexible controls, improved temperature consistency, quieter operation, and a more manageable long-term approach to serving the building's varied spaces.

Comfort Professor designed and installed a Bryant multi-zone ductless heat pump system with nine outdoor heat pumps and a combination of indoor equipment for the downstairs bar and function room, upstairs function room and waiting area, offices, bathrooms, and hallway. Indoor units were positioned to serve their designated areas, while the team carefully routed piping, drainage, electrical connections, and communication wiring through the existing building. The design replaced the club's reliance on aging hydronic air handlers and large rooftop cooling equipment in the areas served by the new system, without requiring wholesale reconstruction of the facility.

Rather than continuing to invest in repairs and maintenance on older hydronic air handlers and large rooftop cooling equipment, the club invested in a system designed around how its spaces are used. Individual zoning allows lower demand in unoccupied areas while supporting comfort in rooms hosting events and activities. The installation represents a significant initial investment, but improved efficiency, individualized control, and reduced reliance on aging equipment may help manage future operating and maintenance costs. The contractor also reported $57,000 in rebates or tax credits; the final incentive status should be verified before publication.

“The biggest goal on this project was to give the Woburn Elks Club a modern HVAC system without having to completely reconstruct an older building around it. We were working with brick walls, finished ceilings, multiple rooms and limited knowledge of what we would encounter behind existing construction. Our team designed the Bryant multi-zone system around those conditions and carefully routed and installed the equipment to provide each area with the comfort it needed. The end result is a much more flexible heating and cooling system with individual zone control, improved efficiency and a cleaner long-term solution for the club.”
